The Upper-Berbice community of Kwakwani, has received a fire tender from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The community was without this emergency vehicle for more than a year, which became a burning concern for residents.
During the period the community was without a tender, at least one home was destroyed by fire. Residents can now breathe a sigh of relief that the equipment was replaced. The situation was brought to the attention of the Regional Democratic Council, by Councillor Mark Goring, who made the discovery during a field visit. Regional Chairman Deron Adams, subsequently wrote to Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn, requesting for the inoperable tender to be replaced at the earliest possible time.
In a Facebook post, Adams expressed gratitude to Minister Benn for responding with urgency to his correspondence. “The RDC will continue to engage the ministry on issues such as this, including the provision of a Fire Station and appropriate Tender for Wismar as well as the burning issue of fire hydrants for these communities,” the post said.
