THE TRUTH IN BLACK AND WHITE

Region 10 MP Jermaine Figueira, elected as Chairman of PAC

MP Jermaine Figueira

Region 10 Member of Parliament Jermaine Figueira, has been elected as Chairman of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Friday. This election came on the heels of a no-confidence motion being tailored against former Chairman David Patterson. Figueira who is a teacher by profession, is serving his second term in Parliament. He also serves as Chairman of the PNCR Region 10 Chapter.

Figueira said the confidence shown to him by his fellow colleagues to elect him to the post, is highly appreciated. He however maintained that the removal of Patterson was a miscarriage of justice against his colleague MP, who was doing a phenomenal job as Chairman. “His removal by this said motion, Mr. Speaker, sets a very bad precedence of the architecture of the procedural aspect of matters of the House and other committees and so the removal of Mr. Patterson is no victory here today,” Figueira said at the convening of the first PAC meeting, after the motion was called. He however reasoned that matters of the House will continue and he will do so without fear or favour. “We on this side of the House, with a world-wind of resoluteness, will manage the affairs of this committee to ensure transparency and accountability of the people’s money,” he said. “We will redouble our efforts to get the work done by meeting as often as possible to get much work that was stalled as a result of the PPP’s most despicable motion, to remove David Patterson as Chairman of this Committee.

Figueira promised to rely on team work and said he will remain committed to ensuring the interest of every Guyanese is meant in every regard.
