THE TRUTH IN BLACK AND WHITE

MC’s Institute training Lindeners to become entrepreneurs

For the town of Linden and Region 10 at large, the unemployment rate has been significantly high for as long as one can remember. However, in an attempt to combat and cope with this, residents have been getting more involved in entrepreneurship with hopes of increasing their standard of living.

With the aim of creating knowledgeable, professional, passionate, strategic and creative entrepreneurs, MC’s Educational Institute is now offering entrepreneurial courses in collaboration with the Small Business Research Centre.

MC’s Educational Institute is a private institution that has been providing education at the secondary level to persons 11-years-old and over, for the past 13 years.

In an interview with INFO 10, Owner and Principal of MC’s Educational Institute, Kevin DeYoung, stated that the school’s programme is designed to offer school dropouts an opportunity to continue their education at any time in their life, hence, there is no upper age limit.

DeYoung related that the school is named after his mother, Marcia Craig who has been a teacher for over 50 years.

MC’s Educational Institute was established in 2008 after Craig and DeYoung were encouraged to open their very own secondary school.

“My mom (Marcia Craig) has been an educator for more than 50 years and because of that, after both of us have worked for private schools in Linden, we were encouraged to start a private school of our own. Even to some of the students who knew what we were capable of, had asked us to start a school,” DeYoung recalled.

DeYoung who has been an educator for over 20 years, said that him and his mother started the school with no money, just faith that everything would work out and an aim to provide quality, effective and inclusive education.

Hence, the school, which started off with just 35 students, was accommodated for at the Bayroc Community Centre for a number of years and parents would contribute teaching materials such as black boards.

The school which is now located at YMCA building in Retrieve, Linden had over 60 students in 2020 but due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, that number has decreased.

The institution offers forms One to Five classes and 11 subjects at the CSEC Level including Mathematics, English, Social Studies, Integrated Science, Human and Social Biology, Agricultural Science, Principles of Business, Principles of Accounts, Office Administration, Electronic Document Preparation Management, and Physical Education.  Additionally, the private school has been fully involved in extracurricular activities.

Over the years, the school has been having 70 percent and above pass rates at CSEC with Grades One to Three.

Recently, MC’s Educational Institute added entrepreneurial courses to its programme, to boast economic activities in Linden.

DeYoung who is a former President of the Linden Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Development, noted that during his tenure as President of the business organisation, he realised that residents were really interest in becoming entrepreneurs but were not aware of how to do so, in an effective way.

Hence, he was motivated to incorporate entrepreneurial courses in his institution’s curriculum.

“As President of the Linden Chamber of Industry, Commerce and Development, I did my research and investigation and I realised that there are persons who want to do business the right way but does not know how to,” DeYoung remembered.

He went on to say, “So I would have experimented and provided a bit of entrepreneurial support to some persons and their businesses and they were successful. So I realised that if persons are given the right support and education, along the right path that business and economic activities in Linden”.

DeYoung stated that MC’s Educational Institute caters for all and produces well rounded individuals.
