The Region 10 community of Rockstone will host a fishing extravaganza in October which is a highly anticipated comeback from the fish festival that was not held for a few years as a result of flooding and COVID-19.
The event, which used to be annual, brought scores fishing enthusiasts to the community for a day of fun and adventure. Much recognition was given to the community and its tourism potential over the years and the aim is to revive the tourism sector of the community with the extravaganza.
While the festival was organized by an independent committee, the extravaganza is being organized by the Toshao and village council. In a recent interview with the media, Toshao Flagran Carter said the event is highly anticipated since social activities have been halted for years in the community and villagers are eagerly awaiting the return on their yearly fete.
“I think the population is looking forward for a day of fun; we will also have some time to enjoy the outside atmosphere, enjoying the outdoors and, of course, lots to eat and drink.”
There will be many prizes to be won, emphasis will be placed on the largest catch; there is going to be an adult, a senior and junior category,” Carter mentioned.
The Region 10 Tourism Committee will also play a role in the activity as they strive to develop the community into a eco-tourism destination. Rockstone is filled with eco and aqua tourism potential as it is neatly nestled between springs, greenery and the majestic Essequibo River. The community is known for its fresh water fishes and bird watching. It is also strategically located between Linden and Bartica.
In this regard, efforts are being made to establish eco lodges in the community.
